PRINTED STEREOVIEWS

In contrast to photographic stereoviews, which were actual photographs pasted on hard curved mounts, other stereoviews were printed on flat thin cards. Production costs for these were much lower, and they were produced in large quantities, to be either sold cheaply, or given away free, as incentives to buy magazine and newspaper subscriptions, or products such as boxes of cereal. Since they were printed using a half-tone process involving thousands of small dots, they lacked the detail found in most photographic stereoviews. However, when seen through a viewer, all do reveal a stereoscopic effect.
