B. W. KILBURN
The
Kilburn brothers opened a stereoview business in 1865 in Littleton, New Hampshire.
When Edward Kilburn retired in 1877 and his brother Benjamin W. Kilburn took
over the management, the company was the largest producer of stereoviews in the
U.S. Kilburn also expanded the list to include worldwide subjects, and by
1890, employed photographers around the world. James M. Davis became associated
with the company around 1882 and was involved in the distribution business. Although all Kilburn stereoviews with
Philippine subjects bear his imprint, his formal affiliation with the company
is not clear. Production ceased with the death of B. W. Kilburn in 1909.
All Kilburn
stereoviews published during the period 1898 to 1909 follow the same format and
presentation on buff curved mount. Although Kilburn perfected the efficient
mass-production of stereoviews, the quality was inconsistent and the
photographs tend to have poor contrast and many have faded. The Kilburn
trade list followed a simple numbering system and its main series was numbered
from 1 to about 17400. The Kilburn reference number is prefixed with the letter B in this catalog.
The majority of
Kilburn views are on military subjects, with a very strong coverage of the
daily life of American soldiers in the Philippines. There is an interesting
selection on the Insurrectos, as well as Filipino people and how they
interacted with the Americans. In addition, Kilburn is the only publisher with
a good coverage of Mindanao and Sulu scenes. The captions
tend to be nationalistic, extolling the bravery of "our brave
Boys" while being rather condescending towards Filipinos. It is believed that B.
W. Kilburn wrote the captions himself.
