PHILIPPINE STEREOVIEWS
KEYSTONE VIEW COMPANY
The Keystone View Company was
launched in 1892 by B. L. Singley, an amateur photographer in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
It was to become the largest publisher of stereoviews in the twentieth century. By
1940 more than 40,000 titles had been produced. Until
1897, Singley himself was taking all the photographs and the quality of
the prints rather mediocre. After that date, he dispatched
professional
photographers throughout the world, including the Philippines. In
1909, the entire Kilburn stock of negatives was acquired by Keystone. In 1912,
Keystone purchased the rights to several series of Underwood negatives and by
1915 the H. C. White Company had also transferred all its files to Keystone. In
1920 the Keystone View Company was the only major publisher of stereoviews,
with offices around the World, including London,
Paris, Sydney and
Tokyo. It ceased
regular production of stereoviews in 1939. When the company folded
up, the stocks were kept for some time in the Meadville factory, and it seems that some of
the better negatives were looted. The remaining ones are now in the California
Museum of Photography at the University
of California in Riverside.
All Keystone
views carry a photographic reference number. The earlier
views
(corresponding to the lower numbers) were on curved tan mount. All
later views
are on curved dark gray mount, for which Keystone views are well
known. Most
gray-mount Philippine views have descriptive text at the
back. When the negative had been
acquired from another publisher, the original source was usually
indicated with
a code letter prefixing the number such as V for Underwood and W for
White. The catalog number used here is the Keystone reference number
with the prefix K.
The subjects
covered by Keystone tend to be educational, with much focus on agriculture,
industry and ethnology. Many views depict the life of people around Manila and the rest of Luzon,
as well as Igorots and Negritos, and the Manila hemp, rice, coconut,
sugar, and
rubber industries. The captions are descriptive and respectful
of Philippine culture. There are few city views, war scenes or
political subjects.
