GRIFFITH AND GRIFFITH
George
W. Griffith, who had been a canvasser for Underwood & Underwood,
established a stereoview distributing company with his brother in 1896. They
soon expanded to cover worldwide subjects, and the trade list reached 10,000
titles in 1910. Few titles were added after 1912 and the company ceased
operations in 1917.
Views
known from collections include a series on tan curved mount numbered in the
range 2750 to 2820 with short and factual captions. Another series is
numbered in the 6500s and was probably published in different sets as some are
on tan mounts while others are on dark gray mount. This series carries longer
captions, some with a condescending style similar to that of Underwood and Kilburn.
Most Griffith views depict daily life in the Philippines in Manila and in the provinces. The catalog number used here is the original Griffith reference number (if any) with the prefix F.
